Mini Herb Profile | Valeriana officinalis | Valerian

Valerian! Well known, well loved or well hated!

Did you know that abut 1-2% of the population gets hyperactive on Valerian? It’s true.

Another fun fact is that some felines LOVE Valerian root just as much as Catnip. Except if you have a weirdo cat like I do who likes NOTHING.

My favorite way to use Valerian root, is not for insomnia like it’s well known for but for pain. Especially cramping & spasms in the body.

Because Valerian is also rich in calcium, it makes a wonderful ally for women who experience intense menstrual cramping. I like to combine Lemon Balm with Valerian for an extra added boost of calming for nerves and anxiety as this is no doubt an issue during moon cycles as well.

Valerian however, is also used as a sleep aid for some folks. But it is not a “fix” all in the insomnia department, so if you’ve ever tried it and it didn’t work, chances are your dosage was wrong, or another nervous system herb has got your name on it!

I find that Lavender, Valerian & Skullcap is one of the best remedies around for headaches of many kinds.

Tincture is always the way to go with conditions that are acute and need attention immediately, but tea is also a lovely option.

I actually LIKE the flavor of Valerian and feel it has a tangy sort of flavor. Other people just think it smells like dirty socks. lol:) xoA
